Drawing Number 30S MIDDLE EARTH, LOTHLORIEN, Stylised Plan of the General Layout of the Complex of Lothlorien. Aerial Elevation:
In this drawing the Complex of Lothlorien is shewn as a stylized plan wherein it it shewn a two perfect circles. In practice it may not be as formal as this, because of the location and type of the actual trees at the site. I have not been shewn the site, nor has it been described to me, so that I have no way of knowing exactly how it is. However, be that as it may, the general idea of the plan can probably be followed fairly closely. The Complex, including the Palace (Drawings Numbers 30N,30-0,30P,30-Q,30R), will accomodate approximately eighty resident persons when all is occupied. The Complex is 25 feet above ground level and is composed of 24 Class "A" (small) tree-houses, 4 Class "B" (large) tree-houses, and 4 Class "C" tree-houses, all arranged in a circular pattern and surrounding the Palace of Queen Galadriel. The houses are arranged in two circles, inner and outer. The houses are connected one with another by means of gangway platforms, so that people may walk around the entire circles from house to house. The two circles are connected with each other by means of suspension bridges, and the inner circle is connected by the same means to the Public Terrace of the Palace. The Class "C" structures are for use as small cafe-bars, shops, and similar establishments. The Class "A" and "B" tree-houses have their own private terraces above their accomodation, and the Class "C" are situated in the centre of their terraces, for the convenience of their customers. Access to and from the ground is provided by spiral staircases, and access for customers in wheelchairs is provided by "Tresaf" cabin hoists in suitable locations around the site (Drawings Numbers 30J and 30K). Stores and water are supplied by means of simple hoists (Drawing Number 30I, Sketch (d)).
Notes: The ground-to-platform height of all Talans, Gangway platforms, and also the First Floor of the Palace is twenty-five feet. The buildings are in and among the treetops. Existing trees are not to be felled, but to be incorporated into the structures. Reinforced concrete pillars simulating tree-trunks may be used where technically adviseable on safety grounds.
Dimensions of Complex: Total outside diameter: 260 feet To outer rim of outer walkway: 204 feet. To outer rim of inner walkway: 128 feet. Palace: 63 feet by 63 feet overall.
Key to Drawing Layout: "A" 2-person tree-house 14'by14' with roof-terrace (see Drawing Number 30H, in blog). "B" A larger version of "A" for 5-persons. "C" Cabin on a large talan (25'by25') see Drawing Number 30M. (This is for cafe-bar or similar). "D" Access talans, also forming walkways around the perimeters of the Complex. "E" Suspension Bridges connecting the two perimeter walkways and also the inner walkway with the Public Terrace of the Palace. The Complex of Lothlorien is, in effect, an aerial village hidden in the forest, in accordance with the text of Professor Tolkien, except that is, perforce smaller. It is envisaged that it will become a popular venue for visitors, who will be able to stroll around it at will, and also visit the Public Areas of the Palace. See also Drawing Number 30T, also published in this blog.

It may be of interest to some readers to know that I have other written works, not concerning Middle Earth, details of which may be found by consulting: www.lulu.com the publishers, and looking under 'John Bentley' for author, 'The Embers of War' for book title. Keywords such as 'Wartime Resistance' 'World War 2 Resistance' and 'post-war Britain' may also be useful. The Section in which to seek is 'Literature and Fiction' There are two more titles due to be published: 'The Years of the Copper Sun' and 'The River Battery' 'The Embers of War' contains some sixteen colour illustrations, and 'The River Battery' thirty-five colour illustrations. 'The Years of the Copper Sun' is not illustrated. The publishers display a preview of any book in their catalogue. The book number is 3952811.
